Why does my body feel so different during pregnancy?

Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it also asks your body to adapt to a lot of change in a relatively short period.
As your baby grows, your centre of gravity gradually shifts and the way you stand, walk and move can change. Your muscles and joints are also adapting to different loads, while everyday things like sleeping, sitting at work or simply getting comfortable can start to feel a little different.
For some women, these changes can be accompanied by aches and discomfort — commonly around the lower back, pelvis, hips or upper back.

As an Osteopath, rather than looking at one area in isolation, I’m interested in understanding the bigger picture. That means listening to what you’re experiencing, looking at how your body is moving and considering things such as your daily activities, work, exercise and stage of pregnancy.
Where appropriate, Osteopathic care may include gentle hands-on treatment alongside advice about movement, exercise and ways of adapting everyday activities to help you stay comfortable and active.
Every pregnancy (and every person) is different, so care should always be tailored to you. And where symptoms require further investigation or aren’t appropriate for osteopathic care, we can help guide you towards the right healthcare professional.

I’m Emily, an Osteopath soon to start at Southcote Proactive Healthcare in Maidstone.
After Osteopathy helped me so well through my own pregnancies, I left nursing and retrained and now practice with a particular interest in women’s health, pregnancy and postnatal care, as well as working with babies and children.
Over the coming weeks I’ll be sharing more practical information about pregnancy, recovery after birth and looking after your body through the different stages of family life!
