What is Reiki – and Can It Help Me?

February 2, 2019

Reiki is Japanese for 'universal life force'. 'Rei' means highest spiritual consciousness and 'Ki' means life-force energy.  If often gets pronounced in different ways, but if you pronounce it as ‘Ray-Key’, you’re there!

Ki as life-force energy is the energy that both surrounds and is within all living things – everything has an energetic vibration. The healthier and happier a living thing is, the more life-force energy it has and the better the energetic vibration. In humans, the life-force energy also helps to promote physical, emotional, mental and spiritual balance. Conversely, low life-force energy may indicate imbalance, sickness and stress - or make you vulnerable to getting sick and stressed.

A Reiki therapy session assists with the flow of this energy within you, with the aim of stimulating your own natural healing potential.  Often, conventional medicine tends to focus on diagnosing and treating your symptoms, whereas Reiki aims to unlock your life-force to heal you from the inside and address the root cause of illness.  It can work hand-in-hand with conventional medicine as it may reduce side effects of any medication and support your body as it undergoes conventional medical treatment.

Reiki is a non-intrusive therapy, with very limited or no direct contact and you can remain clothed throughout the session. You will only absorb as much Reiki as is needed and your body will use this energy in whatever form is appropriate for you at the time.  It is performed with little or no direct contact on the body, so is perfect for those who feel uncomfortable with the idea of a body massage.  It is a gentle and safe treatment that can be especially beneficial for people who are finding life tough or are going through a difficult time, as Reiki can help you to feel calm and centred.

Reiki can bring about positive changes in health by rebalancing your body and bringing it into a state of well-being and can be applied for ailments of a physical, mental and emotional nature. As with any form of holistic therapy, the number of sessions required would depend on your body's healing response, together with how long you have been experiencing the condition.

What Happens During a Treatment?

Your whole body will be treated during a session of 30 or 60 minutes' duration and a treatment can feel like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person - body, mind and spirit - and can create many beneficial effects which include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well-being.

Each person experiences Reiki differently and sensations often vary with each session. Clients often feel sensations of heat, tingling or a coolness in some areas, whilst others can have an emotional response which indicates energy shifts are taking place and your body is letting go of what it no longer needs in order to restore balance and harmony within.
